All good things come to an end

Feeling equipped as the final day of the Grow Academy boot camp is coming to a close. . .

We learned so much this week and had to work in pairs to compile a presentation that we would pitch to new Grow recruits. I had the privileged of working and presenting with Nathaniel Dicks. We were awesome! (even if I say so myself).

Nathaniel and I ready for action

It was fun when we did the activity of transferring an egg with your neck and chin to the next person, girls and boys separated of cause. We couldn’t let the egg fall and break because we had to think about the chick that it could be…

Now as we fry in this heat, we will end off with a lovely braai 🙂

Thanks RLabs and the Grow Academy for imparting free knowledge into our lives. January the 7th is the next boot camp.

Growing and learning

The boot camp day 3 and today, day 4 was absolutely fruitful. We learned so much that it is impossible to remember everything. I’m sure there was something that each one could take and run with.

Yesterday was all about Traditional PR (press releases such as newspapers) and WebPR (online news releases and news created by the public itself eg. tweeting about an incident that is happening). We were taught how to create news releases and when blogging, key words and linking is important for you to be easy to find. It gives you a voice and you should always be honest and transparent.

Today 4 ladies from Added Value came to educate us about Marketing insight and desk research. Research made interesting, there’s more to just researching, there are many stages and the planning stage and knowing exactly what should be researched is most critical. I’ve learned that when researching, you have to have an open mind on the topic and not researching things that only interest you. Research involves digging deeper as there is more to be found than what’s on the surface. Researches have to be inquisitive, curious, always wanting to know why? and eager to learn new things that is researched, regardless of your opinion on the topic. I loved the fact that researching can be fun as you dig deeper in a topic, you’ll find very interesting things. Search engines you can trust is very important.

When recruits are asked about the week, a lot still mention the pro shell from Tuesday’s session. I think it’s cool that we learning and taking in things we can use. Tomorrow, the last day of the boot camp, can’t wait to see what’s in store.

Day 2 of boot camp at RLabs

The 2nd day, leaving everyone very empowered and ready to take on the world!

We started the morning with a check-in where we had to find something close by in the environment that best describes how we feel. People came with very interesting objects. I had a flower because I couldn’t find a rose. My mother compares me with a rose because it’s soft, beautiful and gentle, so I felt as bright and summerish this morning as that bright orange flower was.

Today’s facilitator was a wonderful women, Max. She grabs your attention, uses awesome analogies and goes into depth with things and also gives part of herself to make you relate more… She asked the question, How do you make money online? and as the day went on she unwrapped the answer and made us think how internet can be used for business. She said you are not going to please everyone and that’s okay but you have to be strong and develop a “pro shell” which is strong and tough but also kind, it is being able to handle anyone laughing at you and your ideas. Being pro is being bigger than yourself and being different, dare to be different and not go with the crowd. I know everyone hears it all the time but don’t you think you hear it so much for a reason? Shouldn’t you actually take action and be different…? Be bold, be foolish if you have to, ask dumb questions, don’t be afraid to go back to the basics.

Max told us to think and write down how life would be if we didn’t make it or find a job or be pro. It got people to realise we would be nothing, purposeless and just like any other nobody that didn’t make it. Think about your calling and where you fit in. You have to find or make your place! Do something in real life, let people see. Don’t wait-create.

The key to making money online is finding a solution to other people’s pain, problems and what they are struggling with. She then had us think and write down what video would we put on youtube that would be a 5 minute teaching video. We all have something, some skill that we can teach. You learn best by seeing what other people are doing.

She mentioned 6 things that drive people and that we could provide or cater for.

  1. People long to grow and learn,
  2. Be connected,
  3. Be an individual and special,
  4. People long for safety,
  5. Then excitement, thrill and edge,
  6. Then we want to leave a legacy.

Can you offer people those things with your business? Find the thing that people would want to pay for with delight. You can sell anything online, the internet is a global market. What attracts people is being memorable by thinking differently. There is space for you.

She ended off with the analogy that an egg, carrot and coffee is all transformed differently by the same thing which is hot water. An egg might look like the inside is soft like it usually is but it could be deceiving and hard/boiled on the inside. So, the question was, how will you be transformed?

Day 1 at the Grow Academy Boot Camp at RLabs

Today with excitement in the air was the 1st day of week 2 of the 6 week boot camp, which by the way has nothing to do with the army, it’s all social media!

As part of my tourism internship and to expand my mind a little I was told that the boot camp would be good for me and I could sit in as a guest on the side lines. I was then asked to help with the social media coverage and then asked to take photos, as I was doing that, Monique said I must leave it and just join the recruits and be part of what is happening. I did not object to that!

We started the day the RLabs way with a unique check in and Bradley Naidoo from Chisana Tours treating us like soldiers. Craig Ross then gave us something to think about, the world beyond 2020. He encouraged us to push boundaries and build on things that already exists. We did two activities. For the 1st one, in groups we had to discuss how we would handle certain customers online, and the 2nd activity involved us having to think beyond 2020 and how we would promote a sushi restaurant that did not get much people in because of the winter season. The group that I was in went wild and thought big and far in the future, saying that we would have an app that would make the restaurant the coolest restaurant in the galaxy! The Intergalactic Sushi App! We said that the app would allow you to teleport yourself and your friends to the restaurant and each night would be a different theme. The app would allow virtual food samples that comes out of your mobile phone and also make online bookings. This app would be really cool to have in the future, I think it is too unreal and advanced to develop now. It was fun letting all the creative juices flow like that.

Rafiq Philips, who works for MIH and has a very active webaddict.co.za website, did a presentation and said that you are what you publish on the web, so whatever you publish must make a difference and bring you a step closer to your goals. I like that. He also said we should share our ideas on our blogs and that’s what I will do.

So now we ending the day with an opportunity to blog. What a lovely day. 4 more days to go 🙂 ready to learn more!

A weekend I don’t want to forget

This weekend had so much in it and things I did that I never want to forget. I had some ups and downs but mostly ups.

Friday was brilliant! I went with RLabs to the Social Media for Teens class graduation. Chisana Tours had to do a tour on Table Mountain. So Bradley Naidoo asked me to speak about the fauna and flora of our Wonder of Nature! It was out of my comfort zone but I did it! I was a tour guide with Bradley for a few minutes. This time it was different to the normal tours I spoke on with my fellow Tourism students at CPUT. It felt good sharing my interest in the Mother City’s beauty.

The night I attended youth which was super awesome! We all working on a dance we will perform in church when we ready (I hope it’s soon). I love the people in the youth really, we like family or better!

My Saturday started with sad news of three matriculants that lost their lives in a horrific car crash and the forth one who fought for his life in hospital but today he is thankfully okay, just injured. My heart goes out to their family and friends. I’m not even that close to them but I still feel the pain, I can’t imagine what they going through. They are in my prayers. But my Saturday was well spent with my good friend Timothy. Always brightening my day.

My Sunday was once again brilliant! It was the Biggs Family day and this time Ramaine, (one of my family members who is in show business) she put together a production that many of us took part in. There was some singing, dancing, beat boxing, drag queen performances which was so funny, I even sang a solo in front of all those people with my sister, Amy’s support from behind the curtain lol. There was dedications, honouring, handing out gifts and our very own book compiled by Glendor with contributions from all the families. There was even modelling of Grizelda’s fashion line “Zadah designer wear” and also Marlene’s matric ball dresses she made. I got a chance to wear my matric ball dress and show off my aunty’s stunning work. We all had so much fun in the production, watching it and mingling and meeting new family members.

Some of the Biggs Family

I love my Big Biggs family.

Be careful what you wish for.

I just love the feeling you get after being sick!

Last Wednesday I woke up with a terribly sore and scratchy throat and my voice was husky. I was so happy and loved the sound of my voice so much, when I tried to talk that I didn’t want to stop talking and laughing. I always said that I envy the people whose voices go husky because I wanted to hear how I would sound. I wanted my voice like that but I didn’t ask for the pain to come with it in my throat.

I was supposed to rest my voice but I didn’t have the chance. I couldn’t resist screaming and reacting to the movie Breaking Dawn Part 2 that I went to go watch the Friday night with my work colleagues at RLabs. I just loved the way my voice sounded but again I say I hated the pain and having nights coughing myself awake.

The Saturday morning I woke up and couldn’t take it any more. My mom took me to the doctor that concluded that I have bronchitis and gave me medicine. And now today my voice is healing, I’ll miss the sound of it though but I can finally sing again (excited).

I feel great, back to my old self. Thanks for all the prayer and care 🙂 God bless
